Drum & Bass New Zealand style

Currently one of the most popular electronic dance music styles in New Zealand, d&b has become intertwined with their own musical culture in exactly the same manner as dub, reggae, soul, rock and hip-hop have all become as pervasive as fluoride in water. And, Wellington's wholehearted embrace of bass-heavy breakbeat culture, alongside other key centers like Christchurch, Auckland and Dunedin, has been a key factor in this incontestable, yet rarely publicly acknowledged cultural shift. These days based at Sandwiches Nightclub (Bass Frontiers home base since the mid 2000s), over the last eleven years, Bass Frontiers has seen numerous classic repeat appearances (perhaps offences should be the word given the nature of the parties) from the likes of: Doc Scott, Calibre, Marcus Intalex, DJ Marky, Ed Rush and Optical and Zinc amongst many others (over the two-hundred plus events Bass Frontiers have held since inception). Additionally, Bass Frontiers has worked as a functional Wellington launch pad for the careers of internationally-respected New Zealand based d&b acts The Upbeats, Trei, State of Mind, Concord Dawn, Bulletproof and so on. On Saturday 27th March celebrate live on Awdio.com 11 amazing years of Bass Frontiers live from Sandwiches in Wellington, New Zealand with the best of their local talent.

Here are some of Ewan’s moans

“Why do (almost always male) journalists in particular insist on making exhaustive lists at the end of any given time period / year / decade etc.?

Come to think of it, why do people insist on referring to to the year 2010 as the start of a new decade when it shouldn’t really start until 2011 – there wasn’t a year zero was there?

Why is my mail inbox stuffed with links to hundreds of bland anonymous post-minimal deep-house promos that sound like they were made on a laptop in twenty minutes?
Why can only half the people sending me these promos spell my name correctly? (“Hello Erwan Peason you are being sent this promo because you are a valued member of our music scene.

Why didn’t I buy that Korg PS3200 when I had the chance?

Why isn’t Berlin by the seaside?

Why am I still incapable of growing a beard? I’m 37 years old, for goodness sake.

The Mad Professor comes to...

A disciple of Lee "Scratch" Perry, Mad Professor was one of the leading producers in dub reggae's second generation. His Dub Me Crazy albums helped dub make the transition into the digital age, when electronic productions started to take over mainstream reggae in the '80s. His sound is still as fresh today and he'll be playing live at Paris’ Glazart and on Awdio.com on Friday 5th March. Read More

His space-age tracks not only made use of new digital technology, but often expanded dub's sonic blueprint, adding more elements and layers of sound than his forebears typically did. In the mid-'90s, he returned to the basics, debuting a more retro-sounding style on the Black Liberation Dub series. Additionally, he runs his own studio and label, Ariwa, which is home to a stable of vocalists and some of the finest British reggae productions today. As his reputation grew, he became a remixer of choice for adventurous rock and techno acts, most notably revamping Massive Attack's entire second album under the new title No Protection.
