Interview: Terry Hunter (US)

As an unofficial ambassador for Chicago’s influential House music scene, Terry Hunter has been out in clubs around the world DJ’ing for over 15 years. He’s also been keeping very busy as a remix artist working with the likes of Mary J Blige and Masters at Work. On Friday 29th January he’ll be spinning at Paris’ Djoon club and live on Awdio.com. Djoon got him to give a quick interview before he takes to the decks. Read more

Djoon: Tell us about your first encounter with House music
Terry Hunter: I must have been about 11 years old when I went to a party on the beach in Chicago with Frankie Knuckles and other well known DJs… I couldn’t believe it, how did they mix all those tracks as though there was only one… From that moment on, I was addicted.

D: The 5 Beats have asked you to prepare an early NYC Detroit/ early Chicago set, does this have any meaning to you?
TH: Absolutely, as this when house had its big moment. I was a fan of this music and I built my career as DJ –Producer playing and making this music. So it’s a night not to be missed.

D: You’re also very active on the Hip-Hop scene with the Violator All Star DJs etc. Is this a change in your music or just another side of Terry Hunter?
TH: I would say both, I love all music as long as they are made with the soul…I’ve always been a big fan of Hip-Hop…I love sould and funk and of course disco, R ‘n’ B, rock…Some people imagine that I only listen to house.

D: How do you perceive today’s house music scene?
TH: I enjoy the tracks coming out at the moment…All these sounds coming out of Africa and producers close to my style. I would like it if artists took the time to produce more…This music should span out to other countries as the lack of record sales isn’t good for the scene.

D: What do you listen to these days?
TH Lots of rare grooves, hip hop, R ‘n’B and house. I’m simply trying to find inspiration for 2010 to bring my music to another level. It’s important to keep going out and to discover new things to incorporate in our work.

D: What are your resolutions for 2010?
TH: To finish my solo album which will be composed of all styles of music, which I’m very proud of, and the summer hit ‘Jus Music On Rosehip’ on EMI.

Meet the residents: Sven Love...

This is a series of interviews with the resident DJs who work hard to maintain the sound quality of their club. We always hear about the famous guests who are invited to spin at clubs, but it is the work and energy of the resident DJ that makes the club what it is. So you are invited to meet the residents. Djoon in Paris just wouldn't be the club it is today without the tireless and dedicated ‘Cheers ‘ DJs Sven Love and Greg Gauthier. There next event is Cheers' 90's House Special live from Djoon on Awdio.com, Sat 23rd January. Read More

Greg Gauthier
Where do you spin and how often?
djoon club cheers party on saturday once a month and dance culture on sunday

How would you describe your sound?
vocal, black, house, deep, modern disco/soul music

What is the role of a Resident DJ?
to make you forget you might want to hear a guest

What qualities should he/she have?
a personal vision of music, party and the club.
something to express and being able to build a long term musical project/following

How is spinning at your own night or club and spinning as a guest DJ different?
very different.... i don't really like playin' as a guest dj, except for someone who as built "something" like i did, but usually i got better at home.

Is there a moment you wished the guest DJ had stayed at home?
there is always something to learn from every kinda set, and i like to hang out with my friends and dance so

How do you win over your crowd?
i follow what i feel first and put a lot of energy and sincerity in it, but magic will always stay a bonus and that 's what makes it beautiful.

What’s the best way to start and end a night?
when its packed early and till the end.
usually the last hour is always the best, i like to treats those who stay till the ends with something special, usually not house music

You have been promoting the night ‘Cheers’ in Paris for over ten years, how has the public changed? Is it the same crowd who have grown up with you or an entirely new crowd?
today we still have a few people who were there in 94, but also a lot of new (house) heads, and there are much more house dancer in paris today than back then.

What will you be doing when your 64?
music i hope

Sven Love
Where do you spin and how often?
Something like twice/ three times a week, at Djoon, Queen, and many other clubs in Paris

How would you describe your sound?
From Soulful house, Gospel, deep Garage to more rough, pumpin house sound (for the Queen club in Paris!).

What is the role of a Resident DJ?
Educate the crowd... Please the crowd.

What qualities should he/she have?
Musical culture, technical abilities, smile, and a being a little crazy sometimes!

How is spinning at your own night or club and spinning as a guest DJ different?
Different as I really know my crowd when I play at my clubs - so when I play as a guest dj it's more like discovering a new crowd, like traveling... Both (own night, guest djs) have their charms (and disadvantages too)

Is there a moment you wished the guest DJ had stayed at home?
Often unfortunately.

How do you win over your crowd?
Play the right track at the right time... Question of timing!

What’s the best way to start and end a night?
Start with a stomper, end with a surprise!

You have been promoting the night ‘Cheers’ in Paris for over ten years, how has the public changed? Is it the same crowd who have grown up with you or an entirely new crowd?
The public has definitely changed, only some people stayed, but most of the old crowd has left, some have children, marriage, etc. It's been 15 years now!
But, strangely, even the new crowd wants to hear old stuff, like 90's house!

What will you be doing when your 64?
Writing books somewhere.
:-)
